How to get from Tan Son Nhat airport to District 1—and why your arrival terminal changes the best route
Compare direct cars and bus 109 from Tan Son Nhat’s T1, T2 and T3 to Pham Ngu Lao, Ben Thanh and eastern District 1.

For most arrivals, the simplest route to District 1 is a taxi or app-booked car from the terminal where the flight lands. Bus 109 is the useful lower-cost exception: it runs directly from T3 to western District 1, ending at Saigon Bus Station beside 23/9 Park.
The terminal matters because T1 and T2 share the older Trường Sơn side of Tân Sơn Nhất, while T3 has a separate road approach. “Domestic terminal” is no longer a precise pickup instruction.
Identify T1, T2 or T3 first
Published operating information has the terminals divided this way:
- T1: domestic Vietjet Air flights.
- T2: international flights.
- T3: domestic flights operated by Vietnam Airlines, Pacific Airlines, VASCO, Bamboo Airways and Vietravel Airlines.
The last group of domestic airlines completed its move to T3 in August 2025, leaving Vietjet as the only airline at T1, according to Tân Sơn Nhất airport authorities quoted by Sài Gòn Giải Phóng.
Airlines can still reassign an individual flight. Use the terminal shown on the live flight record, boarding pass or airline message rather than relying only on the carrier list.
If someone is meeting you, send T1, T2 or T3, your flight number and the numbered pickup point shown outside. A driver waiting at T1 or T2 is not at the curb outside T3.
Choose the route by destination and luggage
| Option | Best for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|
| Taxi | A direct trip without setting up an app | Final metered cost varies with traffic and fees |
| Ride-hailing car | Seeing a quoted fare before booking | The app may direct you to a particular pickup zone |
| Bus 109 | T3 arrivals staying around 23/9 Park, Phạm Ngũ Lão, Bùi Viện, Lê Lai or Bến Thành | Not door to door; reaching it from T1 or T2 requires a terminal shuttle |
| Pre-arranged hotel car | A late arrival, large group or substantial luggage | Usually costs more; the hotel must know the correct terminal |
Taxi or ride-hailing car: the default from all three terminals
Follow current ground-transport signs for the taxi queue, or the pickup directions shown in the ride-hailing app. Do not rely on an old description of a curb, lane or parking level: terminal traffic arrangements can change.
As a broad reference, Vietnam Airlines publishes estimates of VND150,000–200,000 for a taxi, plus an additional airport charge, and VND130,000–170,000 for an app-booked car to the city centre. These are planning ranges, not fixed quotes; app pricing, traffic and the exact District 1 address affect the result (Vietnam Airlines’ transport comparison).
Use the signed taxi queue rather than accepting an unsolicited ride in the arrivals hall. For an app booking, check the registration plate and vehicle description before boarding.
Bus 109: direct from T3 to western District 1
Route 109 runs between T3 and Bến xe buýt Sài Gòn, or Saigon Bus Station, beside 23/9 Park. On the airport-to-city journey, the operator lists a route through Hoàng Hoa Thám, Cộng Hòa, Hoàng Văn Thụ, Nguyễn Văn Trỗi, Nam Kỳ Khởi Nghĩa and Hàm Nghi, then along Lê Lai to the bus station. The operator’s route notice identifies T3—not T1 or T2—as its airport terminus.
This makes 109 most useful for accommodation around:
- 23/9 Park and Phạm Ngũ Lão;
- Bùi Viện and the western side of the central visitor area;
- Lê Lai and the Bến Thành area, if the walk from the stop is manageable with luggage.
It is less convenient for hotels around Đồng Khởi, Nguyễn Huệ, the Opera House or the Saigon River. Those addresses are east of the bus terminus and may still require a substantial walk or a short onward ride.
The operator’s notice does not publish a lasting fare or timetable; it directs passengers to 1900 638 494 for current departure times, fares and stops. Check the current listing before relying on 109 for an early or late arrival.
What changes at each terminal
T1: Vietjet domestic arrivals
For most T1 arrivals, take a taxi or book a car from the pickup area indicated by terminal signs or the app.
Bus 109 does not start at T1. Reaching it means taking the free inter-terminal shuttle to T3, then waiting for the city bus. That can make sense with light luggage when price matters, but a direct car is cleaner after a late flight or with several bags.
T2: international arrivals
Complete immigration, baggage collection and customs before setting a pickup time. A flight’s scheduled landing time is not a useful meeting time for a driver.
For a hotel transfer, specify international arrivals, T2. Bus 109 requires the inter-terminal shuttle to T3, so it adds a transfer before the trip into District 1.
T3: most domestic arrivals
T3 is the straightforward terminal for bus 109: follow its ground-transport signs after baggage claim rather than shuttling to the older terminals.
For a car pickup, make sure the booking and any message to the driver say T3. The terminal is approached from the Trần Quốc Hoàn–Cộng Hòa side of the airport, separate from the T1–T2 arrivals area.
Moving between terminals
The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam’s published external-shuttle guidance lists these free shuttle stops:
- T1: columns B17–B20, lane B;
- T2: columns B15–B16, lane B;
- T3: columns A17–A20, level 1.
The same notice gives operating hours of 4:30am to 12:30am and a frequency of 15–20 minutes (CAAV’s T3 operating guidance). These details were published in May 2025, so check terminal signs on arrival in case a stop or schedule has changed.
Do not walk along airport approach roads to reach T3 with luggage. If the shuttle is not operating when you arrive, ask airport staff for the current transfer arrangement.
Match the route to the part of District 1
“District 1” is too broad to make the decision by itself. Save the hotel’s full address before leaving the terminal.
- Phạm Ngũ Lão, Bùi Viện or 23/9 Park: bus 109 is a practical one-seat option from T3; from T1 or T2, weigh the shuttle transfer against taking a direct car.
- Bến Thành Market or Lê Lai: 109 can work from T3 if you are comfortable walking from the city stop with luggage.
- Nguyễn Huệ, Đồng Khởi, the Opera House or the riverfront: a direct car avoids an onward walk or transfer from the bus terminus.
- Northern District 1, including Đa Kao or the Tân Định edge: use a direct car rather than travelling into the Bến Thành area and doubling back.
Before joining a queue, load the exact address in a map and save a screenshot. It is more useful to a driver than “District 1” or “city centre,” and it reduces confusion between properties with similar names.
